After a hot morning of riding dirt bikes at the Stillwater 500 riding area, I decided to spend part of the afternoon chasing theaters in the Stillwater area. I had visited Stillwater a few weeks before, but had since uncovered some more addresses.
I was mostly on the hunt for a few smaller theaters, which I knew would not be of much photographic interest, but wanted to photo-document them nonetheless. I approached from the south, so my first stops were the "Unknown Nickelodeon" and Alamo Theater on South Main. One was a hospice and the latter was Harrison's Electric. They were not very interesting...merely brick storefronts and had no remaining semblance of a theater at all. But, that's what I expected, so I snapped some photos and moved on.

A sure sign that I have been traveling waaay too much is that I didn't even notice that a drive-in theater has reopened in Guymon, Oklahoma. The Corral Drive-In Theater reopened on April 3, 2009 after approximately a year of resurrection. For years the drive-in was left to rot and slowly became the town trash heap for decaying cars and other trash. The theater has now been revitalized and shows a double feature on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Sound is broadcast over FM radio. So, if you are an Oklahoma viewer, please stop in and support this re-entry into the drive-in theater family.

Okay, so it wasn't me jumping out of the plane, but it is still fun to watch and take pictures. The jump took place in Cushing, which boasts a nice skydiving facility called Skydive Oklahoma. A friend had decided to perform a tandem jump, so we made the trek to watch her plummet from the sky. I couldn't resist the opportunity to make some stops on the way, though.
The first stop was Stillwater. Its not exactly on the way to Cushing from Oklahoma City, but its not horribly out of the way. I had visited Stillwater on a previous photo expedition a few years ago to document the remains of Stillwater's three drive-in theaters. Only one provided much photographic interest. At the time, though, I wasn't really actively researching cinemas. So, a return trip with the camera was a necessity to try and fill the gaps. I was able to photograph four theaters with a good degree of certainty.

Welcome to the new home of Roadside Oklahoma! I got fed up with my old web host and decided to make the move to a (hopefully) speedier host. I decided to just go ahead and reformat the site once again at the same time. Now begins the process of uploading the content once again!
Roadside Oklahoma will continue to be the home of my research and photography of Oklahoma ghost towns, drive-in theaters, cinemas and roadside attractions. Hopefully the switch to a content management system will allow me to more easily keep this site up-to-date!
